Orson Scott Card Books in Order (Updated August 8, 2026)

Orson Scott Card has written science fiction, fantasy, historical fiction, biblical fiction, thrillers, young adult novels, short stories, and collaborative books across a career spanning several decades.

One part of that bibliography creates most of the confusion: the Ender Universe.

Ender’s story, Bean’s parallel story, the Formic War prequels, Children of the Fleet, and the eventual crossover novel The Last Shadow all occupy the same continuity. They were not published in simple chronological order.

His other major series are much easier. Tales of Alvin Maker, Homecoming, Pathfinder, Mithermages, Empire, Women of Genesis, and Side Step can each be read in straightforward publication order.

Start Here If You Only Want the Correct Orders

For Ender, begin with Ender’s Game.

For Alvin Maker, begin with Seventh Son.

For Homecoming, begin with The Memory of Earth.

For Pathfinder, begin with Pathfinder.

Readers interested in Card’s standalone fiction can choose books such as Songmaster, Hart’s Hope, Wyrms, Lost Boys, Pastwatch, Enchantment, or Magic Street without reading a series first.

The most important recommendation is this: do not begin the Ender Universe with the chronologically earliest Formic War prequel. Ender’s Game is still the strongest first book.

There is no single Ender series containing every related novel in a simple Book 1 through Book 20 sequence.

Because of that, chronological placement and recommended first-reading placement are not the same.

Should You Read Ender in Exile Second?

Chronologically, yes.

For a first read of the wider Ender Universe, not necessarily.

Ender in Exile fills the enormous time gap between Ender’s Game and Speaker for the Dead. However, Card wrote it after several Shadow novels, and parts of its story connect to developments from Bean’s branch.

Readers who only care about Ender’s personal life can safely use:

Ender’s Shadow Books in Order

Bean’s sequence begins by retelling the Battle School era from another perspective, then moves into the political struggles on Earth after the Formic War.

The Last Shadow (2021) is not simply Ender Saga Book 6 or Shadow Book 6.

It is the crossover conclusion to both major branches.

Orson Scott Card wrote the First Formic War trilogy with Aaron Johnston.

The trilogy is complete.

It takes place roughly a century before Ender’s victory and deals with humanity’s first major confrontation with the Formics.

Children of the Fleet

Children of the Fleet (2017) is another Ender Universe novel.

It focuses on Dabeet Ochoa and Fleet School, which develops after the original military purpose of Battle School has changed.

The book takes place after Ender’s Game era events but does not need to interrupt the main Ender or Bean sequences.

For a first reading, treat it as:

Read it after Ender’s Game, and preferably after you have some familiarity with the postwar Ender Universe.

A War of Gifts

Instead, finish one sequence at a time.

For Ender, start with Ender’s Game and preserve the later branch points rather than beginning with the Formic War prequels.

For Alvin Maker, the answer is now especially simple: read all seven novels from Seventh Son through Master Alvin. The series finally has its published conclusion.

Homecoming, Pathfinder, and Mithermages can each be read straight through in publication order. Side Step currently stops after Reawakening while its third volume remains unpublished.

The main rule is to distinguish chronology from introduction. In the Ender Universe, earlier events were often written much later. Ender’s Game should still come first.
