The Temeraire Books in Order

Temeraire imagines a Napoleonic world in which dragons are intelligent, organized, and used by nations as an aerial military force.

The series begins when Royal Navy captain William Laurence captures a French ship carrying a dragon egg. The dragon hatches before the prize can reach land and chooses Laurence as his captain.

Laurence names him Temeraire. Their bond removes Laurence from the conventional naval career he expected and places him inside the less respectable British Aerial Corps.

The nine books form one continuous sequence. Political decisions, military campaigns, dragon rights, and Laurence’s relationship with his country develop from volume to volume.

1. His Majesty’s Dragon

His Majesty’s Dragon (2006): Captain William Laurence captures a French dragon egg and is unexpectedly chosen by the hatchling, forcing him to exchange the Royal Navy for Britain’s dragon-based Aerial Corps.

Laurence initially views the transfer as the destruction of his career and social future. Temeraire’s intelligence, curiosity, and affection quickly turn the assignment into the most important relationship of his life.

An Important Alternate Title

Their route brings them into contact with the feral dragon Arkady and his community, whose independence gives Temeraire another example of dragons living outside direct human control.
