Will Wight is an American fantasy author best known for Cradle, a completed twelve-book progression fantasy series following Lindon’s rise from one of his world’s weakest sacred artists to a figure capable of challenging powers far beyond his home.
He also writes the Traveler’s Gate Trilogy, the parallel Elder Empire trilogies, and The Last Horizon, an ongoing seven-book space fantasy series. His next announced project outside those established series is Overworld, scheduled for April 2027.

Cradle Books in Order
Cradle is Wight’s largest completed series.
Wei Shi Lindon is born Unsouled in Sacred Valley, where a person’s spiritual path determines status and survival. After receiving a vision of his home’s destruction, he leaves the valley to gain enough power to change its fate.
The twelve novels form one continuous story and should be read in publication order.
Unsouled
- Unsouled (2016): Lindon is treated as spiritually defective in Sacred Valley until an encounter with a heavenly messenger reveals that his home will be destroyed unless he becomes strong enough to prevent it.

Blackflame
- Blackflame (2017): Lindon trains in the destructive Path of Black Flame to prepare for a duel he is not yet strong enough to survive.
Eithan places Lindon and Yerin through increasingly dangerous trials while concealing the full purpose of his plans.
The book establishes the Blackflame Empire more fully and turns Lindon from a determined outsider into a serious sacred artist.
Skysworn
- Skysworn (2017): Lindon’s delayed duel arrives as the awakening of the Bleeding Phoenix throws the Blackflame Empire into crisis.

- Underlord (2019): Lindon, Yerin, and Mercy race to reach the Underlord stage before the Night Wheel Valley closes and the Akura family chooses its representatives for the Uncrowned King tournament.
Advancement now requires more than gathering power. Each character must understand the personal truth driving their sacred arts.
The book brings Lindon into the politics of the Akura clan and prepares the main group for conflict on a much larger stage.
Uncrowned
- Uncrowned (2019): Lindon and his allies enter the Uncrowned King tournament, where the strongest young sacred artists from powerful factions compete under the attention of Monarchs.
Old rivals return, new alliances form, and political goals matter as much as individual victory.

Wintersteel

Waybound

Why Cradle Must Be Read in Publication Order
Each novel begins from the advancements, injuries, alliances, and revelations of the previous book.
Later volumes reveal the identities and motives of characters whose histories are intentionally concealed. They also openly disclose the outcomes of tournaments, battles, faction conflicts, and major ascensions.
Cradle has no alternative chronological arrangement at the novel level.

Is Threshold Book Thirteen?
It is the thirteenth major Cradle publication if collections are counted, but it is not a thirteenth main novel.
Waybound remains the conclusion of Lindon’s twelve-volume central story.
Threshold is a collection of additional tales rather than a continuation requiring another novel afterward.

The Traveler’s Gate Trilogy in Order
Traveler’s Gate was Wight’s first published series.
The kingdom of Damasca is protected by Travelers, people who enter magical Territories and return with powers, creatures, weapons, and abilities earned through dangerous trials.
Simon begins as an ordinary young man from the village of Myria. When prophecy appears to choose someone else as the hero, Simon enters the deadly Territory of Valinhall and begins earning power without divine selection.
House of Blades
- House of Blades (2013): Simon enters Valinhall after Travelers attack his village and carry away people he wants to save.
Unlike Travelers chosen by established organizations, Valinhall Travelers gain every ability by surviving the House’s rooms, guardians, and tests.
Simon’s efforts place him beside Alin, the prophesied hero, and Leah, a young woman with secrets tied to the kingdom.
The Crimson Vault
- The Crimson Vault (2013): Simon continues training in Valinhall while conflict over the Incarnations threatens Damasca.
The political struggle involving Leah’s family and the royal system becomes more important.

City of Light
- City of Light (2014): Simon, Leah, Alin, and their allies face the final consequences of the conflict among Territories, Incarnations, and the rulers of Damasca.

The original trilogy is complete.

The Elder Empire Explained
The Elder Empire consists of two complete trilogies telling the same large conflict from opposing sides.
The Sea trilogy follows Calder Marten, captain of the ship The Testament.
The Shadow trilogy follows Shera, an assassin working for the Consultants.
Their stories occur concurrently. Scenes that appear mysterious in one trilogy may be explained from another perspective in the parallel book.
This is the only Will Wight series where the reading order is genuinely flexible.
Elder Empire: Sea Books in Order
Of Sea and Shadow
- Of Sea and Shadow (2014): Calder Marten searches for the Heart of Nakothi, an artifact that could help establish a new Emperor after the death of the ruler who held the Empire together.
Calder views the imperial collapse as both a danger and an opportunity.
His mission brings him into conflict with Shera and the Consultant’s Guild, whose goals appear to oppose the restoration of centralized rule.
Of Dawn and Darkness
- Of Dawn and Darkness (2015): Calder and his crew become more deeply involved in the struggle over the Empire, Great Elders, and factions attempting to control awakened powers.

Events that seem sudden or unexplained may be shown more fully in the parallel Shadow novel.
Of Kings and Killers
- Of Kings and Killers (2020): Calder’s campaign reaches its conclusion as imperial succession, the Great Elders, and the conflict with Shera’s faction converge.
The novel completes the Sea trilogy.
It should be paired with Of Killers and Kings for the full ending from both sides.
Elder Empire: Shadow Books in Order
Of Shadow and Sea
- Of Shadow and Sea (2014): Shera, an assassin of the Consultant’s Guild, attempts to prevent the Heart of Nakothi from creating another Emperor.
Her mission mirrors the events of Of Sea and Shadow from the side Calder considers his enemy.
The novel introduces the Consultants, Shera’s training, her unusual emotional detachment, and the faction determined to prevent another imperial dictatorship.
Of Darkness and Dawn
- Of Darkness and Dawn (2015): Shera and the Consultants continue their campaign as older powers awaken and the struggle over the Empire becomes increasingly dangerous.
The novel covers the same broad phase as Of Dawn and Darkness.
Reading both reveals how each side misunderstands the other and how separate missions intersect.
Of Killers and Kings
- Of Killers and Kings (2020): Shera’s side of the final conflict brings the Consultants, imperial forces, Great Elders, and rival plans for the future into direct confrontation.
The novel completes the Shadow trilogy.
Its ending overlaps with Of Kings and Killers while providing different information and emotional emphasis.
The Best Elder Empire Reading Methods
There are three workable approaches.
Method One: Alternate by Pair
This is the most balanced first reading:
- Of Sea and Shadow: Follow Calder through the opening conflict.
- Of Shadow and Sea: Revisit the same period through Shera.
- Of Dawn and Darkness: Continue Calder’s side.
- Of Darkness and Dawn: Read Shera’s parallel second volume.
- Of Kings and Killers: Enter the finale with Calder.
- Of Killers and Kings: Complete the ending through Shera.
This method keeps both viewpoints fresh, but the second book in each pair will repeat parts of the timeline.
Method Two: Shadow First

Method Three: Complete One Trilogy First
Read all three Sea books, then all three Shadow books, or reverse that choice.
This produces the smoothest uninterrupted character arc but leaves major events only partly explained until the second trilogy.
No method is uniquely correct.
The important rule is to read both book-one perspectives before assuming that either Calder or Shera understands the entire conflict.
Is Elder Empire Part of Cradle?
The series are not direct sequels.
They occupy different worlds within Wight’s wider cosmology and use different casts, cultures, and power systems.

The Last Horizon is an ongoing space fantasy planned to contain seven books.
Varic Vallen is a powerful wizard who has experienced multiple alternate versions of his own life. Those lives give him rare magical knowledge and advance warning of several galactic threats.
He becomes captain of the starship Last Horizon and begins gathering a crew whose members are uniquely qualified to confront those enemies.
Each title corresponds to a major position within the crew.

The Engineer
- The Engineer (2023): Varic seeks an engineer powerful enough to complete the Last Horizon’s crew while a galactic weaponsmith prepares a creation capable of changing the balance of power.
The search leads to a conflict involving robots, magical technology, and forces whose ambitions extend beyond one world.
The book develops the crew structure and continues directly from the threats identified in The Captain.
The Knight
- The Knight (2024): Varic and the crew seek a knight capable of standing against one of the galaxy’s major threats.
The mission expands the series’ treatment of heroic orders, magical armor, political loyalty, and enemies that cannot be defeated through ordinary firepower.
The Last Horizon becomes increasingly complete, but every recruited member brings personal history and unfinished danger.
The Pilot

Cradle is not required reading before The Captain.
Any wider cosmological links should be treated as background rather than as a reason to merge the series.
Overworld
