Katherine Kurtz is best known for the Deryni novels, a long-running historical fantasy sequence that combines medieval politics, religion, dynastic conflict, and a hereditary form of psychic and magical ability.

Her bibliography has one major reading-order challenge.

The Deryni novels were not published in their internal chronological order. Kurtz began with the reign of young King Kelson, then moved roughly two centuries backward to Camber of Culdi, returned to Kelson, moved back again to the persecution following Camber’s era, and later wrote a trilogy about Alaric Morgan’s childhood immediately before Deryni Rising.

For a first reading, publication order is the safest choice.

Camber of Culdi takes place much earlier.

Deryni Rising was written first.

That distinction matters because the early Kelson novels introduce the Deryni, Gwynedd, the Haldane monarchy, the Church, and the persecution of magic as mysteries the reader discovers alongside the characters.

The Camber books then reveal the deeper history behind that world.

Starting chronologically makes the background clearer, but it also removes some of the historical distance that gives the original trilogy its atmosphere.
