Clive Cussler Books in Order (Updated September 8, 2026)

Clive Cussler was an American adventure novelist and maritime explorer whose name became associated with several long-running series: Dirk Pitt, the NUMA Files, the Oregon Files, Isaac Bell, and the Sam and Remi Fargo adventures. He also wrote nonfiction about shipwreck discoveries and classic automobiles.

Clive Cussler Books in Order

Cussler died in February 2020, but several of the series he created continue through established co-authors and successor writers. That makes current reading order especially important. A recent book carrying the Clive Cussler name may be a new continuation rather than a reprint, and several confirmed future titles are already scheduled.

Which Clive Cussler Series Should You Start With?

  • Dirk Pitt: start with The Mediterranean Caper.
  • NUMA Files: start with Serpent.
  • Oregon Files: start with Golden Buddha.
  • Isaac Bell: start with The Chase.
  • Sam and Remi Fargo: start with Spartan Gold.
  • Best introduction to Cussler overall: the Dirk Pitt novels remain the core place to begin.

The five principal series occupy different corners of the larger Cussler adventure world. Some characters and organizations cross between series, but each sequence has its own primary cast and can be started independently.

Dirk Pitt Books in Order

Dirk Pitt is Cussler’s original and longest-running hero. He begins as a marine engineer and adventurer associated with the National Underwater and Marine Agency, usually called NUMA, and eventually moves into senior leadership while his son Dirk Pitt Jr. and daughter Summer Pitt become increasingly important.

  1. The Mediterranean Caper (1973), also published as Mayday!
  2. Iceberg (1975)
  3. Raise the Titanic! (1976)
  4. Vixen 03 (1978)
  5. Night Probe! (1981)
  6. Pacific Vortex! (1983)
  7. Deep Six (1984)
  8. Cyclops (1986)
  9. Treasure (1988)
  10. Dragon (1990)
  11. Sahara (1992)
  12. Inca Gold (1994)
  13. Shock Wave (1996)
  14. Flood Tide (1997)
  15. Atlantis Found (1999)
  16. Valhalla Rising (2001)
  17. Trojan Odyssey (2003)
  18. Black Wind (2004), with Dirk Cussler
  19. Treasure of Khan (2006), with Dirk Cussler
  20. Arctic Drift (2008), with Dirk Cussler
  21. Crescent Dawn (2010), with Dirk Cussler
  22. Poseidon’s Arrow (2012), with Dirk Cussler
  23. Havana Storm (2014), with Dirk Cussler
  24. Odessa Sea (2016), with Dirk Cussler
  25. Celtic Empire (2019), with Dirk Cussler
  26. Clive Cussler’s The Devil’s Sea (2021), by Dirk Cussler
  27. Clive Cussler The Corsican Shadow (2023), by Dirk Cussler
  28. Clive Cussler Obsidian Sky (scheduled November 10, 2026), by Dirk Cussler

Recommended: use this publication sequence for a first Dirk Pitt read. Although individual adventures often contain self-contained mysteries, Pitt’s career, family, NUMA role, friendships, and previous exploits accumulate across the novels.

Why Pacific Vortex! Is Book 6 Even Though It Was Written First

Pacific Vortex! creates one of the most common Dirk Pitt ordering questions. Cussler wrote it before The Mediterranean Caper, but it was not published until 1983.

Modern series listings place it as Book 6, after Night Probe!. That publication placement is the safest first-reading order. Readers curious about Cussler’s writing development can later revisit it as the earliest written Pitt adventure.

The Dirk Pitt Series After Clive Cussler

Dirk Cussler had already co-written eight Dirk Pitt novels with his father before taking primary responsibility for the series. Beginning with The Devil’s Sea, the books continue under the Clive Cussler brand with Dirk Cussler as author.

These are continuing series books, not optional spin-offs. Readers following Dirk Pitt should continue directly from Celtic Empire into The Devil’s Sea, The Corsican Shadow, and the confirmed upcoming Obsidian Sky.

NUMA Files Books in Order

The NUMA Files shifted the focus from Dirk Pitt to Kurt Austin and Joe Zavala, members of NUMA’s Special Assignments Team. Pitt’s organization remains central, but this is a separate primary series and does not require finishing every Dirk Pitt novel first.

  1. Serpent (1999), with Paul Kemprecos
  2. Blue Gold (2000), with Paul Kemprecos
  3. Fire Ice (2002), with Paul Kemprecos
  4. White Death (2003), with Paul Kemprecos
  5. Lost City (2004), with Paul Kemprecos
  6. Polar Shift (2005), with Paul Kemprecos
  7. The Navigator (2007), with Paul Kemprecos
  8. Medusa (2009), with Paul Kemprecos
  9. Devil’s Gate (2011), with Graham Brown
  10. The Storm (2012), with Graham Brown
  11. Zero Hour (2013), with Graham Brown
  12. Ghost Ship (2014), with Graham Brown
  13. The Pharaoh’s Secret (2015), with Graham Brown
  14. Nighthawk (2017), with Graham Brown
  15. The Rising Sea (2018), with Graham Brown
  16. Sea of Greed (2018), with Graham Brown
  17. Journey of the Pharaohs (2020), with Graham Brown
  18. Fast Ice (2021), with Graham Brown
  19. Clive Cussler’s Dark Vector (2022), by Graham Brown
  20. Clive Cussler Condor’s Fury (2023), by Graham Brown
  21. Clive Cussler Desolation Code (2024), by Graham Brown

Publication order is also the recommended NUMA Files order. Kurt Austin, Joe Zavala, Paul Trout, Gamay Trout, and the wider NUMA team develop as a recurring ensemble even when individual mysteries are resolved within one book.

Paul Kemprecos and Graham Brown Eras

The first eight NUMA Files novels were written with Paul Kemprecos. Beginning with Devil’s Gate, Graham Brown became the principal collaborator and later the continuing author.

That authorship transition does not reset continuity. Devil’s Gate remains Book 9 rather than the beginning of a second NUMA series.

Oregon Files Books in Order

The Oregon Files follow Juan Cabrillo and the Corporation, a highly capable private organization operating from a heavily modified ship disguised as an aging freighter. The Oregon and Cabrillo first appeared within the broader Cussler world before receiving their own series.

  1. Golden Buddha (2003), with Craig Dirgo
  2. Sacred Stone (2004), with Craig Dirgo
  3. Dark Watch (2005), with Jack Du Brul
  4. Skeleton Coast (2006), with Jack Du Brul
  5. Plague Ship (2008), with Jack Du Brul
  6. Corsair (2009), with Jack Du Brul

  9. Mirage (2013), with Jack Du Brul
  10. Piranha (2015), with Boyd Morrison
  11. The Emperor’s Revenge (2016), with Boyd Morrison
  12. Typhoon Fury (2017), with Boyd Morrison
  13. Shadow Tyrants (2018), with Boyd Morrison
  14. Final Option (2019), with Boyd Morrison
  15. Marauder (2020), with Boyd Morrison
  16. Clive Cussler’s Hellburner (2022), by Mike Maden
  17. Clive Cussler Fire Strike (2023), by Mike Maden
  18. Clive Cussler Ghost Soldier (2024), by Mike Maden
  19. Clive Cussler Quantum Tempest (scheduled September 22, 2026), by Mike Maden

Recommended: begin with Golden Buddha and proceed in order. The Corporation has an evolving crew, organizational history, and continuing relationships that make publication order more satisfying than selecting random installments.

Quantum Tempest Is the Next Oregon Files Book

As of September 8, 2026, Clive Cussler Quantum Tempest is confirmed as Oregon Files Book 19 and is scheduled for September 22, 2026. It should therefore be treated as Upcoming, not yet moved into the already-published portion of a reading checklist.

The novel continues Juan Cabrillo’s story under Mike Maden, who also wrote Hellburner, Fire Strike, and Ghost Soldier.

Isaac Bell Adventures in Order

Isaac Bell is a Van Dorn Detective Agency investigator operating in early twentieth-century America. The series combines historical crime, industrial espionage, railroads, aviation, maritime technology, labor conflict, finance, and the approach of the First World War.

  1. The Chase (2007)
  2. The Wrecker (2009), with Justin Scott
  3. The Spy (2010), with Justin Scott
  4. The Race (2011), with Justin Scott
  5. The Thief (2012), with Justin Scott
  6. The Striker (2013), with Justin Scott
  7. The Bootlegger (2014), with Justin Scott
  8. The Assassin (2015), with Justin Scott
  9. The Gangster (2016), with Justin Scott
  10. The Cutthroat (2017), with Justin Scott
  11. The Titanic Secret (2019), with Jack Du Brul
  12. The Saboteurs (2021), with Jack Du Brul
  13. Clive Cussler The Sea Wolves (2022), by Jack Du Brul
  14. Clive Cussler The Heist (2024), by Jack Du Brul
  15. Clive Cussler The Iron Storm (2026), by Jack Du Brul

The Iron Storm was published in May 2026 and is the current Isaac Bell Book 15. It moves Bell directly into the First World War era.

Isaac Bell Publication Order Versus Story Chronology

Several Isaac Bell books revisit earlier years in his career. The Striker, for example, takes place when Bell is still a relatively inexperienced Van Dorn detective.

That makes a strict fictional chronology possible, but it is not necessary for a first read. Publication order preserves the way Bell’s character was developed and avoids repeatedly jumping between early and later stages of his career.

Sam and Remi Fargo Books in Order

Sam and Remi Fargo are a married treasure-hunting team whose adventures combine archaeology, historical mysteries, travel, ancient artifacts, and modern criminals. The series is lighter on organizational continuity than Dirk Pitt or Oregon, but the Fargos’ relationship and past discoveries accumulate across the books.

  1. Spartan Gold (2009), with Grant Blackwood
  2. Lost Empire (2010), with Grant Blackwood
  3. The Kingdom (2011), with Grant Blackwood
  4. The Tombs (2012), with Thomas Perry
  5. The Mayan Secrets (2013), with Thomas Perry
  6. The Eye of Heaven (2014), with Russell Blake
  7. The Solomon Curse (2015), with Russell Blake
  8. Pirate (2016), with Robin Burcell
  9. The Romanov Ransom (2017), with Robin Burcell
  10. The Gray Ghost (2018), with Robin Burcell
  11. The Oracle (2019), with Robin Burcell
  12. Wrath of Poseidon (2020), with Robin Burcell
  13. Clive Cussler The Serpent’s Eye (currently scheduled for April 13, 2027), by Ryan Pote

The Serpent’s Eye is officially listed as Fargo Book 13. As of this update it is a confirmed future release, so Wrath of Poseidon remains the latest published Fargo novel.

The Gray Ghost Connects Fargo and Isaac Bell

The Gray Ghost contains one of the most obvious cross-series connections in the Cussler universe. A historical section involves Isaac Bell and a mystery that later reaches Sam and Remi Fargo.

You do not need to complete the Isaac Bell series before reading Fargo Book 10. The crossover is useful background rather than a requirement that turns the two series into one combined reading order.

How the Five Cussler Series Connect

Dirk Pitt and the NUMA Files share the strongest institutional connection because both revolve around NUMA. The Oregon Files also developed from characters introduced within the broader adventure world, while Isaac Bell and Fargo occasionally connect through historical or family links.

Even so, readers should not merge all five series into one massive chronological list. The cleaner approach is to preserve the internal order of each sequence and treat crossovers as bonuses.

Clive Cussler Nonfiction and Maritime Books

Cussler’s real-life interest in maritime archaeology also produced nonfiction. These books sit outside the adventure-series reading orders.

  • The Sea Hunters, about Cussler’s searches for historic shipwrecks
  • The Sea Hunters II, a further collection of maritime expeditions
  • Clive Cussler and Dirk Pitt Revealed, a reference book about Cussler and his fictional hero
  • Built for Adventure, centered on classic automobiles from Cussler’s collection

These are Optional for readers following the novels. They do not occupy numbered positions between the fiction releases.

Should You Read Every Clive Cussler Book by Publication Date?

Not across all series. A master publication list would constantly jump from Dirk Pitt to NUMA, Oregon, Isaac Bell, and Fargo. That is more useful for studying the Cussler publishing program than for following characters.

Series order is the better method. Read each sequence in publication order, then move to another branch of the Cussler universe when you are ready.

A Practical Order for Reading the Cussler Universe

Readers who eventually want all five series can use the following order without trying to interleave individual publication dates.

  1. Dirk Pitt, beginning with The Mediterranean Caper
  2. NUMA Files, beginning with Serpent
  3. Oregon Files, beginning with Golden Buddha
  4. Isaac Bell, beginning with The Chase
  5. Sam and Remi Fargo, beginning with Spartan Gold

This is a recommended series-level route, not an official fictional chronology. A reader who prefers historical mysteries can start with Isaac Bell, while treasure-hunt readers may prefer Fargo.

Current Clive Cussler Series Status in September 2026

The Cussler publishing universe is still active. The NUMA Files currently reach Book 21 with Desolation Code. Isaac Bell reached Book 15 with The Iron Storm in May 2026.

The Oregon Files will reach Book 19 when Quantum Tempest is released on September 22, 2026. Dirk Pitt Book 28, Obsidian Sky, is scheduled for November 10, 2026. Fargo Book 13, The Serpent’s Eye, is currently scheduled for April 13, 2027.

Because release schedules can change, future titles should remain labelled as upcoming until their publication dates pass.

Clive Cussler Reading Order Questions

What was Clive Cussler’s first published Dirk Pitt novel?

The Mediterranean Caper, published in 1973, was the first Dirk Pitt novel released to readers.

Was Pacific Vortex! written before The Mediterranean Caper?

Yes. Pacific Vortex! was written earlier but published later. Modern Dirk Pitt reading orders place it as Book 6.

Do I need to read Dirk Pitt before the NUMA Files?

No. The two series share NUMA and parts of the larger fictional world, but Kurt Austin’s series begins cleanly with Serpent.

What is the first Oregon Files book?

Golden Buddha is Oregon Files Book 1 and the correct place to begin Juan Cabrillo’s dedicated series.

What is the first Isaac Bell book?

The Chase, published in 2007, is the first Isaac Bell novel by publication order.

What is the first Fargo adventure?

Spartan Gold introduces Sam and Remi Fargo as the central treasure-hunting team.

Are new Clive Cussler books still being published?

Yes. Cussler died in 2020, but the series he created continue through successor writers including Dirk Cussler, Graham Brown, Mike Maden, Jack Du Brul, and others.

What is the next confirmed Clive Cussler book?

As of September 8, 2026, the nearest confirmed release is Oregon Files Book 19, Clive Cussler Quantum Tempest, scheduled for September 22, 2026.

Should the five main Cussler series be merged into one order?

No. Crossovers exist, but each series has its own principal cast and internal development. Reading one complete series at a time is clearer.

The Most Reliable Cussler Reading Strategy

For most readers, start the Cussler universe with Dirk Pitt and The Mediterranean Caper. Follow that series in publication order, then choose NUMA, Oregon, Isaac Bell, or Fargo according to the kind of adventure you prefer.

Do not move recent continuation books into a separate category simply because Clive Cussler has died. They remain part of the series created under his name. At the same time, keep confirmed future titles such as Quantum Tempest, Obsidian Sky, and The Serpent’s Eye labelled as upcoming until they are actually released.
