Lois McMaster Bujold Books in Order (Updated August 6, 2026)

Lois McMaster Bujold is an American science fiction and fantasy writer best known for the Vorkosigan Saga and the World of the Five Gods.

Her bibliography offers two very different reading-order problems. The Vorkosigan books were published out of internal chronology, while the Penric and Desdemona stories were released in an order that sometimes moves backward to fill earlier gaps.

The solution is not to force every title into publication order. Bujold herself recommends a lightly adjusted internal chronology for Vorkosigan, while Penric is clearest in the author’s current chronological sequence.

Begin with one of these books:

3. The Curse of Chalion (2001): A physically and emotionally damaged former courtier returns to royal service and discovers that the ruling family is trapped by a divine curse.
4. Penric’s Demon (2015): A young nobleman unexpectedly inherits an elderly temple demon, creating a partnership that reshapes both of their lives.
5. Beguilement (2006): Fawn Bluefield leaves home and meets Lakewalker patroller Dag Redwing during an encounter with a supernatural malice.
6. The Spirit Ring (1992): A young metalworker and her father become involved in necromancy, political violence, and magical engineering in a Renaissance-inspired city.
7. For science fiction, start with Shards of Honor or The Warrior’s Apprentice. For fantasy, start with The Curse of Chalion.

How Bujold’s Books Are Connected

Bujold’s major books belong to three separate continuities:

The Spirit Ring is a standalone fantasy.

The collections Proto Zoa and Dreamweaver’s Dilemma contain shorter fiction, while Sidelines collects nonfiction.

The Vorkosigan Saga is not connected to the World of the Five Gods. The Sharing Knife has its own setting, magic, and characters.

Cordelia’s Story

Shards of Honor

Shards of Honor (1986): Betan survey captain Cordelia Naismith and Barrayaran commander Aral Vorkosigan are stranded together after a military attack, forcing two enemies to cooperate while reassessing their governments and each other.

This is the most reliable starting point for readers who want the family history before Miles appears.

Barrayar

Barrayar (1991): Cordelia adjusts to life on Barrayar while Aral serves as regent during a violent succession crisis that places their unborn child and the future of the empire at risk.

The novel begins immediately after Shards of Honor. Read the two books together.

Cordelia’s Honor

Cordelia’s Honor (1996): This omnibus contains Shards of Honor and Barrayar in their correct internal order.

It is not an additional Vorkosigan novel.

Miles Vorkosigan’s Early Career

The Warrior’s Apprentice

The Warrior’s Apprentice (1986): Miles fails the physical examination for the Barrayaran military academy, leaves the planet, and improvises his way into command of the Dendarii Free Mercenary Fleet.

This is the best alternative starting point for readers who want Miles immediately.

The Mountains of Mourning

The Mountains of Mourning (1989): A young Miles investigates the murder of an infant in an isolated Barrayaran district, confronting prejudice against physical difference and the limits of legal reform.

The novella is included in Borders of Infinity and Young Miles.

Weatherman

Weatherman (1990): Miles serves at a remote weather station and becomes involved in military disobedience and a looming strategic disaster.

The material was incorporated into the beginning of The Vor Game. It is a duplicate rather than a required separate installment.

The Vor Game

The Vor Game (1990): Miles’s first military posting leads from a frozen training base to an interstellar crisis involving Emperor Gregor, mercenaries, and competing political powers.

Read it after The Warrior’s Apprentice. It develops the consequences of Miles’s earlier improvisations.

Young Miles

Young Miles (1997): This omnibus contains The Warrior’s Apprentice, “The Mountains of Mourning,” and The Vor Game.

It is the easiest single-volume route through Miles’s earliest adventures.

Cetaganda and Ethan of Athos

Cetaganda

Cetaganda (1996): Miles and his cousin Ivan attend a state funeral in the Cetagandan Empire and become involved in a conspiracy concerning genetic power, imperial succession, and the ruling haut women.

The story takes place during Miles’s early diplomatic and military years.

Ethan of Athos

Ethan of Athos (1986): Reproductive specialist Ethan Urquhart leaves the all-male planet Athos to investigate a failed biological shipment and meets Dendarii officer Elli Quinn.

Miles does not appear, although his mercenary network affects the story.

The novel can be read independently, but it fits best after Cetaganda and before “Labyrinth.”

Borders of Infinity and the Dendarii Arc

Borders of Infinity

Borders of Infinity (1989): This collection uses a frame story to connect three Miles novellas: “The Mountains of Mourning,” “Labyrinth,” and “The Borders of Infinity.”

Read the collection before Brothers in Arms. Its frame and stories have consequences later in the saga.

Labyrinth

Labyrinth (1989): Miles enters a Jackson’s Whole genetic laboratory to retrieve a scientist and instead becomes responsible for Taura, a genetically engineered super-soldier treated as disposable property.

The novella introduces a character and moral debt that continue through later Dendarii stories.

The Borders of Infinity

The Borders of Infinity (1987): Miles is imprisoned in a Cetagandan camp and turns an apparently hopeless population of prisoners into an organized resistance.

The novella demonstrates Miles’s command style without relying on ships, weapons, or official rank.

Brothers in Arms

Brothers in Arms (1989): Miles arrives on Earth and encounters a clone created to replace and assassinate him, forcing the Vorkosigan family’s hidden enemies into the open.

This begins a closely linked sequence with Mirror Dance.

Mirror Dance

Mirror Dance (1994): Miles’s clone-brother Mark launches a disastrous rescue mission to Jackson’s Whole, then struggles with trauma, identity, and the consequences of trying to become someone other than Miles.

Read Brothers in Arms first. The emotional and political payoff depends on the earlier confrontation.

Memory

Memory (1996): After a career-ending mistake, Miles loses command of the Dendarii and must reinvent himself while investigating a mysterious attack on Imperial Security chief Simon Illyan.

This is the major turning point of the saga. It closes Miles’s mercenary career and begins his work as an Imperial Auditor.

Komarr

Komarr (1998): Miles investigates the destruction of a solar mirror above Komarr and meets Ekaterin Vorsoisson, whose troubled marriage becomes entangled with sabotage and imperial politics.

The novel begins Miles’s second career and should be read before A Civil Campaign.

A Civil Campaign

A Civil Campaign (1999): Miles attempts a badly planned courtship of Ekaterin while family politics, inheritance disputes, business ventures, and parliamentary conflict collide in Vorbarr Sultana.

The novel is partly romantic comedy, but its emotional force depends on Komarr.

Winterfair Gifts

Winterfair Gifts (2004): Armsman Roic investigates a threat during Miles and Ekaterin’s wedding while Taura returns to Barrayar for the celebration.

Read it immediately after A Civil Campaign.

Miles in Love

Miles in Love (2008): This omnibus contains Komarr, A Civil Campaign, and “Winterfair Gifts.”

It collects Miles and Ekaterin’s full courtship arc.

Falling Free and the Quaddies

Falling Free

Falling Free (1988): Engineer Leo Graf discovers that the bioengineered quaddies he has been hired to train are considered obsolete corporate property and organizes their attempt to escape.

The novel takes place about two centuries before Miles’s era.

It can be read at any time, but placing it before Diplomatic Immunity gives the later quaddie society additional historical meaning.

Diplomatic Immunity

Diplomatic Immunity (2002): Miles and Ekaterin’s delayed return from their honeymoon becomes an investigation involving quaddies, Cetagandans, biological warfare, and an apparent military crime.

Read Falling Free first for the strongest context.

Ivan, Vashnoi, and the Late Saga

Captain Vorpatril’s Alliance

Captain Vorpatril’s Alliance (2012): Ivan Vorpatril enters a marriage of convenience while helping a woman targeted by enemies connected to Jackson’s Whole.

The novel takes place before Cryoburn and gives Ivan his own central adventure.

The Flowers of Vashnoi

The Flowers of Vashnoi (2018): Ekaterin leads an ecological recovery project in the radioactive ruins of Vorkosigan Vashnoi and discovers children surviving outside official systems.

The novella belongs after Captain Vorpatril’s Alliance and before Cryoburn.

Two Tales

Two Tales (2026): This print collection contains “Winterfair Gifts” and “The Flowers of Vashnoi.”

It contains no new Vorkosigan fiction.

Cryoburn

Cryoburn (2010): Miles investigates a cryonics corporation on Kibou-daini, where political influence, legal personhood, inheritance, and suspended animation have become one commercial system.

The ending creates a major family transition that should remain unspoiled.

Gentleman Jole and the Red Queen

Gentleman Jole and the Red Queen (2016): Cordelia returns to Sergyar and confronts grief, family change, reproductive choices, and her long relationship with Admiral Oliver Jole.

This is the latest novel in the internal Vorkosigan chronology.

It focuses on Cordelia rather than Miles and works best after Cryoburn.

The World of the Five Gods contains three major novels and the Penric and Desdemona subseries.

The setting is shared, but the books cover different centuries and countries. Only The Curse of Chalion and Paladin of Souls form a direct novel sequence.

The Curse of Chalion

The Curse of Chalion (2001): Former soldier and courtier Cazaril becomes tutor to the Royesse Iselle and discovers that her royal family is trapped by a curse maintained through politics, murder, and divine intervention.

This is the best entry into the Five Gods setting.

Paladin of Souls

Paladin of Souls (2003): Dowager Royina Ista leaves her protected life on pilgrimage and becomes involved in a siege, demonic possession, and a divine task she does not want.

Read it after The Curse of Chalion. Ista and several political consequences carry over directly.

The Hallowed Hunt

The Hallowed Hunt (2005): Lord Ingrey investigates a prince’s death and meets Lady Ijada, whose forbidden spirit animal draws them into ancient shamanic magic and a threatened kingdom.

The novel occurs centuries before the Chalion books and in another country.

It shares the theology of the Five Gods but not the main cast.

World of the Five Gods Chronology

The broad internal order is:

Chronology is not necessary for first-time readers. The Curse of Chalion remains the strongest introduction to the gods and theology.

Penric and Desdemona Books in Chronological Order

Penric and Desdemona is the only currently active Bujold fiction series.

Penric begins as a young nobleman whose life changes when a dying divine accidentally transfers her demon to him. The demon contains the memories and personalities of its previous hosts, who collectively call themselves Desdemona.

Penric’s Demon

Penric’s Demon (2015): Penric unexpectedly inherits Desdemona and must learn whether he will become a condemned sorcerer, a temple servant, or something neither side expects.

This is the required starting point.

Penric and the Shaman

Penric and the Shaman (2016): Penric helps a young temple locator pursue a fugitive shaman accused of murder, while competing forms of magic complicate the investigation.

The story establishes Penric as a working divine and sorcerer.

Penric’s Fox

Penric’s Fox (2017): Penric investigates the death of a woman whose missing demon may hold the key to her murder.

Read it after Penric and the Shaman.

Testimony of Mute Things

Testimony of Mute Things (2025): Penric and his companions investigate a case in which objects, animals, and apparently silent evidence reveal more than the human witnesses.

The story takes place after Penric’s Fox, despite being published much later.

Masquerade in Lodi

Masquerade in Lodi (2020): Penric becomes involved in a canal-side mystery involving a body, concealed identities, temple business, and an unusual religious procession.

This earlier-set novella belongs before Penric’s Mission.

Penric’s Mission

Penric’s Mission (2016): Penric travels on a diplomatic assignment, is betrayed and imprisoned, and meets General Arisaydia and his widowed sister Nikys.

This begins a closely connected three-story arc.

Mira’s Last Dance

Mira’s Last Dance (2017): Penric, Nikys, and Adelis attempt to escape pursuit with help from Mira, one of Desdemona’s more socially experienced former hosts.

Read it directly after Penric’s Mission.

The Prisoner of Limnos

The Prisoner of Limnos (2017): Penric and Nikys attempt to rescue Nikys’s mother from a remote prison while their relationship becomes harder to ignore.

This concludes the travel and rescue arc begun in Penric’s Mission.

The Orphans of Raspay

The Orphans of Raspay (2019): Penric is captured by pirates and becomes responsible for protecting two young girls whose future is threatened by slavery.

The story takes place after Penric and Nikys have established a life together.

The Physicians of Vilnoc

The Physicians of Vilnoc (2020): Penric confronts an epidemic in Vilnoc and works with physicians, temple authorities, and Desdemona to identify its cause and slow its spread.

The novella develops Penric’s medical and magical work.

The Assassins of Thasalon

The Assassins of Thasalon (2021): Penric returns to the city connected to his earlier imprisonment and becomes involved in an investigation involving political murder, old enemies, and unfinished consequences.

This is longer than most Penric stories and is often described as a short novel.

Knot of Shadows

Knot of Shadows (2021): Penric investigates a death in which a frightened ghost and a damaged demon have become entangled.

The novella focuses on the spiritual consequences of sorcery and death.

Demon Daughter

Demon Daughter (2024): A six-year-old girl rescued from a shipwreck creates difficult questions about family, demons, law, and responsibility for Penric, Nikys, and the Temple.

The story moves the series further into Penric’s family life.

Penric and the Bandit

Penric and the Bandit (2024): Penric’s attempt to deal with a roadside criminal develops into a more complicated problem involving justice, desperation, and reform.

The novella follows Demon Daughter in the internal sequence.

Darksight Dare (2026): Penric and Desdemona face a new magical challenge involving perception, risk, and a problem that tests the unusual balance of their partnership.

Published in April 2026, this is the latest Penric and Desdemona story.

The Sharing Knife Books in Order

The Sharing Knife is one continuous fantasy romance and frontier adventure published in four volumes.

Lakewalkers patrol against supernatural entities called malices. Farmers view them with suspicion, even though their sharing knives are essential weapons against the threat.

Beguilement

Beguilement (2006): Fawn Bluefield leaves her family and meets veteran Lakewalker Dag Redwing during a malice attack, beginning a relationship neither community is prepared to accept.

Legacy

Legacy (2007): Dag brings Fawn to his Lakewalker camp, where family hostility, cultural rules, and another malice test their marriage.

Passage

Passage (2008): Dag and Fawn travel by river and begin gathering a mixed company while Dag explores new ways to use and teach groundwork.

Horizon

Horizon (2009): The travelers confront another major malice and try to build a future in which Lakewalkers and farmers can cooperate.

The four books should be read without interruption.

Knife Children

Knife Children (2019): Barr Foxbrush returns to the child he abandoned and discovers that family responsibility and Lakewalker abilities have consequences he can no longer avoid.

This novella is a later codicil to the four-volume story.

Read it after Horizon.

The Spirit Ring (1992): Apprentice metalworker Fiametta Beneforte uses magical craftsmanship to resist a warlord and necromancer who has seized her Renaissance-inspired city.

The novel is a standalone.

It does not belong to the World of the Five Gods, despite its religion, demons, and historical European atmosphere.

Proto Zoa (2011): This collection contains five early Bujold stories, including contemporary fantasy and science fiction written before or around the beginning of her professional career.

The stories are independent, except for early conceptual links in her developing science fiction.

Dreamweaver’s Dilemma

Dreamweaver’s Dilemma (1996): This collection includes the title novelette, “The Mountains of Mourning,” a Sherlock Holmes pastiche, essays, interviews, and supporting Vorkosigan material.

The title story belongs to a very early form of the Vorkosigan universe and is mainly of interest to completists.

Sidelines

Sidelines: Talks and Essays (2013): This nonfiction collection gathers speeches, essays, introductions, travel writing, and reflections from several decades of Bujold’s career.

It can be read independently of the fiction.
